Prospective Officials

The Process

The Process to become an official via SFOA is quite simple and pain-free. The idea is that your training comes from experience. You must work at least two years of youth officiating before you can progress to the high school varsity level. After that, your career path is only limited by how bad you want to move to the NCAA or beyond. Apply via SFOA, Jessica Lundsford Act screening Pay SFOA and FHSAA fees Attend training meetings. It is recommended that you begin attending meetings in May as each meeting builds on the previous week up to the start of the football season in August.

The Cost

The Cost to become an official with SFOA is a lot less wallet-intensive than you might think. Below are all of the approximate costs associated with becoming an official. When you compare this to the money you make in just one weekend (~$80+), you can see that you will recoup your monetary investment quite quickly.

  • Jessica Lundsford Act – $82.50 good for 5 years
  • SFOA – $45/year
  • FHSAA Registration – $46
  • Uniform ~$273 for everything

Total: ~$447

Time Commitment

The time commitment for the most part, is up to your desire to officiate. If you want to just do youth football on Saturdays, that’s fine. If you want to officiate close to your home, that’s fine. If you want to officiate as much as possible, we will work with you to meet your goals. After becoming a SFOA member, the only mandatory time commitment is attendance of weekly (Monday early evening) training meetings.
